I'm not sure as to what you are needed help with. To start a cross-stitch, I always fold the fabric in half and then in half again to locate the center. From there, I work from the center point on the pattern left to right.
Well I am so happy to have all you to help me.
Now do I leave an inch or so to start counting from the edges of the aida, including the top and bottom or should I start my counting down to the middle of the aida and use that as my middle stitch.
There are several ways you can start. If you want to, you can start in the middle. I fold my material in half (both directions) then put an x in the center. Most patterns have the middles marked by having an arrow half way down and across on the pattern. I circle the x where these lines intersect. Then find the color of the symbol and start stitching! You can work your way out in a circle, or just let the colors dictate what direction you go. If the pattern if fully stitched and you know your material is the right size (and you have added extra material for finishing) you can start in a corner by counting down and across your extra material. If you added 3" to both sides then go over 3" and down 3" then place your first x. I hope I haven't confused you more. But it is really easy once you get the hang of it.

What I am cross stitching Nancy is on a very small piece of aida. It is to fit into a frame so that you can send it as a card. It's not very big and I don't have much to make a mistake if I do which I have, as I have taken out the floss to many times to count. I don't cut the floss and start over, but takeout the one that I have made as a stitch. I don't know what my problem is, but when I start counting my stitches, my eyes keep going to the wrong row and I keep making my mistake with the counting of the stitches...... Is there trick to stop doing this?
